As part of the "Visa Paris x Munich" cross-residency program run by the Bureau du Design, de la Mode et des Métiers d'art, Julien Gorrias, industrial designer and former resident of Les Ateliers de Paris, was welcomed to Munich for a three-month stay. This was an opportunity for him to explore new approaches to design in conjunction with local industry, and to initiate collaborations on a European scale.

- Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I'm Julien Gorrias, an industrial designer with a focus on innovation, sustainability and positive impact projects. My work is inspired by the interaction between objects and their environment, with a strong interest in integrating ecological and social values into design.
- Why participate in BDMMA's "Visa Paris x Munich" cross-residency program? Do you already have international experience as a designer?
I'm taking part in BDMMA's "Visa Paris x Munich" cross-residency program to explore new design practices in Germany, a country with a strong industrial tradition and potential for interesting collaborations. The program is an opportunity to immerse myself in an international creative context and to benefit from local expertise, particularly in the Bavarian industrial area, which is of particular interest to me.
I already have international experience in my profession, notably in China at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010 and also in the United States, where I worked for a few months. These experiences have enabled me to broaden my practice and develop a curiosity about how other countries produce and consume.
- What is your project for the 3-month residency, what are the challenges and objectives?
The stakes are twofold: firstly, to understand the Bavarian and wider German ecosystem of design and industrial companies, and secondly, to forge lasting relationships that will lead to partnerships in the future.
- What facilities will welcome you in Munich during your residency?
I'm welcomed by Kreativ Munchen, an organization of the city of Munich which provides Bavarian creative professions (architects, graphic designers, scriptwriters etc.) with premises in a historic building in the city center, the ruffini haus. This incubator aims to support the young German creative scene in the expansion of their projects.
- What's your residency like in Munich?
The residency takes place in several stages: an initial immersion phase to understand local processes and meet the various players in the industry, followed by participation in the various events organized by the city of Munich for creative professions, and then, I hope, the establishment of new partnerships.
