"We want to create a place where people can learn about different themes".

Meet Emmanuelle Sarsar, founder of the Toolbox leather workshop and training centre, and Clémence Berrier, winner of the Savoir-faire en transmission prize since June 2018.

The Atelier Toolbox offers young designers and individuals the opportunity to benefit from the know-how of a team of passionate saddlery and leatherwork craftsmen.

The workshop evolves around three poles which constitute its strength:

  •  training, for professionals and individuals
  • production and prototyping, for companies, designers and individuals
  • space rental, for anyone needing privileged access to workshops and machines.

The love for leather work, the passion for teaching and the human contact make up their philosophy.

Interview with Emmanuelle

How did the Toolbox workshop come about?

"I followed a double course in upholstery and leather goods. Together with a friend, we wanted to set up a training centre on different themes (music, plastic arts, crafts, etc.). As time went by, the space grew and we received many requests for leather goods. Finally, in June 2015, the concept was refined to essentially make leather goods. »

Interview with Clémence

Tell us about your background...

"I studied upholstery and furniture making. I also took leatherwork courses for two years. »

Why the Toolbox workshop?

"I wanted to continue learning about leather goods, to be able to practice and pass on my knowledge. I was looking for a company on a human scale. I really liked the way the workshop worked and the diversification of the workshop with a production unit, a course programme and the machinery. »

What is a typical week at the workshop like?

"I take care of the production part (card holders, bags...). I also assist during the evening classes in saddlery and hand sewing (about 5 students). I also help people who need help with the machines.

What did this experience bring you?

"I was able to refine my learning in leather goods. The courses allowed me to integrate the processes by breaking down each step. It also allowed me to really think about developing new template methods thanks to the students."

What are your future projects?

"I would like to work in a leather goods production workshop on a human scale. If I have the opportunity, I would like to work for the Toolbox workshop as a freelancer. »
